A colpo d'occhio

  • Barrier contraception works by physically stopping sperm from reaching an egg.

  • Types include condoms, female condoms, and diaphragms or caps.

  • Condoms are placed on the penis and female condoms are inserted into the vagina.

  • Diaphragms and caps are dome-shaped devices placed at the top of the vagina.

  • Barrier methods have few side-effects or medical risks.

  • Some barrier methods can protect against sexually transmitted infections.

What is barrier contraception?

Barrier contraceptives do exactly what the words suggest. They provide a physical barrier between the sperm and the egg. If sperm are prevented from meeting an egg, they cannot start to create a baby.

What types of barrier contraception are there?

There are three broad groups of barrier contraception:

  • Preservativi (also known as sheaths). These are placed on the man's penis before having sex. This stops the semen entering the woman's vagina. Read about preservativi - their pros and cons, how effective they are, where to get them, and how to use them.

  • Preservativi femminili. These are put inside the vagina, and form a barrier to the sperm during sex. Read about condoms for women.

  • Diaframmi e cappucci. These are dome-shaped devices which are put right at the top of the vagina before having sex. They are rather more solid than female condoms, with a firmer ring at the edge. Most types come in specific sizes, and you need to see a health professional to determine the right size for you. Read about diaphragms and caps.

Why would I choose barrier contraception?

All types of contraception have pros and cons. You have to weigh up each option and figure out which is best for you personally. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of barrier method are laid out in the specific leaflets linked above. Broadly speaking, barrier methods are not as effective as many other methods, and you have to remember to use them at the time when you are having sex. On the plus side, they have few side-effects or medical risks. Some of the options have the added advantage of protection against infezioni sessualmente trasmissibili and possibly also protect against cancer of the neck of the womb (cervix). See the individual leaflets for details.

For a list of all types of contraception that are available, see also the separate leaflet called Contraception Methods.

Domande frequenti

Can barrier methods protect against cervical cancer?

Some barrier contraceptive options may offer additional protection against cancer of the neck of the womb (cervix). For more specific information, it is best to refer to the individual leaflets for each type of barrier method.

What should I consider when choosing a barrier contraceptive?

When choosing a barrier contraceptive, you should weigh the pros and cons of each option to find what is best for you. Key considerations include their effectiveness, the need to use them at the time of sex, and their side-effects or medical risks. Some types also offer protection against sexually transmitted infections.

Are barrier methods as effective as other types of contraception?

Generally, barrier methods are not considered as effective as many other available contraceptive methods. Their effectiveness can also depend on consistent and correct use each time you have sex.

Do I need a prescription for diaphragms and caps?

For diaphragms and caps, you need to see a health professional to determine the correct size for you, as most types come in specific sizes. This suggests they are not available over-the-counter without professional fitting.
