Blood pressure (BP)
This QOF area focuses on recording blood pressure in patients aged 45 or over. For 2026/27, BP002 carries 15 points with thresholds of 50–90%; the supplied guidance does not identify any changes for this year.
Indicator ID | Description | Points | Thresholds |
|---|---|---|---|
BP002 | The percentage of patients aged 45 or over who have a record of blood pressure in the preceding 5 years. | 15 | 50–90% |
BP002: rationale
BP002 draws on NICE IND112.
Identifying high blood pressure and providing treatment when appropriate is an effective way to improve health. A high reading is common at an initial measurement, but readings often fall when measurements are repeated. Decisions about treatment should follow NICE recommendations on diagnosing and managing hypertension.
The indicator applies to patients aged 45 or over because most hypertension develops after this age. Combining this age group with a 5 years recording window fits with the NHS Health Checks Scheme, which begins at 40 years old. It also brings the indicator into closer alignment with the vascular checks programme and the cost-effectiveness modelling that informed it.
Practices are expected to use opportunities during contact with all adult patients to measure blood pressure.
BP002: reporting and verification
The indicator definition in the table sets out the criteria that must be met.
Personalised care adjustment criteria, covered in Section 6, do not usually apply to BP002. An exception allows practices to exclude a patient from the denominator if they decline the care offered.
