Can I take Co-codamol and Naproxen together?

Guida alle interazioni farmacologiche

There is no direct harmful interaction between co-codamol and naproxen. In fact, they are often prescribed together to provide better pain relief than using one alone. However, because co-codamol contains paracetamol, you must be careful not to take any other products containing paracetamol at the same time.

Perché succede

These medicines work in different ways to target pain. Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) that reduces swelling and pain at the source, while co-codamol (a mix of paracetamol and codeine) works on the central nervous system to change how your body feels and responds to pain. They do not interfere with how the body absorbs or breaks down one another.

It is generally safe to take these together if prescribed by a healthcare professional. Ensure you do not exceed the maximum daily dose of co-codamol, and do not take any other paracetamol-containing products (like Lemsip or certain cold cures). To protect your stomach, always take naproxen with or after food. If you experience any stomach pain or dark, tarry stools, stop taking naproxen and contact your doctor.

Paracetamol overdose

Co-codamol contains paracetamol. Do not take it with any other paracetamol-containing products (such as cold and flu remedies), as this can lead to fatal liver damage.

Opioid addiction and withdrawal

Co-codamol contains codeine, which can cause addiction if used for more than 3 days. Stopping suddenly after long-term use can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Asthma and breathing difficulties

Do not take co-codamol if you have severe asthma or breathing problems, as the codeine can dangerously slow your breathing.

Do not take naproxen if you have asthma that is worsened by aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as it can trigger a severe or life-threatening asthma attack.

Stomach ulcers or bleeding

Naproxen significantly increases the risk of stomach ulcers and internal bleeding. Seek immediate medical help if you vomit blood or pass black, tarry stools.

Pregnancy (third trimester)

Do not take naproxen if you are more than 20 weeks pregnant, as it can cause serious heart or kidney problems in the unborn baby and reduce amniotic fluid levels.

Alcol

You must avoid drinking alcohol while taking co-codamol. Combining alcohol with codeine increases the risk of serious side effects, such as extreme sleepiness, breathing difficulties, and loss of consciousness. Additionally, both alcohol and paracetamol can affect the liver; combining them regularly increases the risk of liver damage. Drinking alcohol while taking naproxen can increase the risk of irritation to your stomach lining and may increase the risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding.

Caffeina

Some versions of co-codamol already contain caffeine. If you consume extra caffeine from coffee, tea, or energy drinks, it may make you feel shaky, anxious, or cause a racing heart.

Food (General)

You should take naproxen with or just after a meal or a snack. This helps to protect your stomach lining and reduces the chance of indigestion or stomach pain.
