Michael is a community pharmacist practicing in the Midlands and South Yorkshire with more than 20 years’ experience advising on medicines and medical conditions. He has a strong background in healthcare training, having produced and delivered training courses for pharmacy teams and staff of residential care settings, including nurses. He has also contributed to pharmacy advisory boards for the management of low acuity conditions in the community.

Michael spent 6 years as an information pharmacist at head-office for a large-multiple pharmacy chain. He provided guidance and advice to pharmacists on clinical, professional and regulatory issues, developing policies and procedures and supporting delivery of clinical services.

During the Covid-19 pandemic Michael participated in a pharmacy-based vaccination clinic, delivering over 4000 Covid vaccinations to the local population during the initial roll-out. He also returned to community practice where he is currently preparing for the NHS Pharmacy First service.

Lithium tablets and liquid medicine

Take lithium regularly every day. Try not to miss any doses. You will need to have regular blood tests while you are taking lithium. Your dose will be adjusted depending on the results of the blood tests. Drink plenty of water each day so that you don't become lacking in fluid in the body (dehydrated).

Chloroquine tablets and liquid medicine

If you are taking chloroquine to protect against malaria, it is important that you take it once a week, exactly as you have been told. Start taking it one week before you travel, then during the whole of your stay, and continue to take it for four weeks after you return. Store chloroquine safely out of the reach and sight of children. Chloroquine is very harmful in overdose or if ingested accidentally.

Leflunomide tablets for arthritis

Leflunomide is prescribed by specialist doctors. It may take several weeks before you start to feel the benefit of the treatment. This is normal. Do not drink alcohol whilst you are taking leflunomide - it will increase the risk of damage to your liver. Leflunomide can harm an unborn baby - use suitable contraception so that you do not become pregnant or father a child.

Raltegravir for HIV

Raltegravir slows the progress of HIV infection. It is one of a number of medicines that you will need to take regularly. Raltegravir tablets are taken once or twice a day. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Raltegravir has been associated with some side-effects, particularly a rash. Your doctor will discuss this with you before you start treatment.

Enfuvirtide for HIV

Enfuvirtide slows the progress of HIV infection. It is one of a number of medicines that you will need to take regularly. It is given by subcutaneous injection. You will need two injections each day.
