About bicalutamide
Tipo di medicinale | An anti-androgen |
Utilizzato per | Treatment of prostate cancer in adult men |
Chiamato anche | Casodex® |
Disponibile come | Compresse |
Bicalutamide belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-androgens. This means that it blocks the actions of male sex hormones called androgens and it also reduces the amount of male hormones (such as testosterone) that your body produces.
In cancro alla prostata, the cancer cells need the male hormone testosterone to grow and multiply well. Hormone treatments like bicalutamide block the effect of testosterone on prostate cancer cells. This slows down the growth of the cancer. Bicalutamide also helps to reduce symptom 'flares' and side-effects from other treatments which may be used for the cancer, or following surgery.
Before taking bicalutamide
Torna ai contenutiSome medicines are not suitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine may only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you start taking bicalutamide it is important that your doctor knows:
Se hai problemi con il funzionamento del tuo fegato.
Se stai assumendo o utilizzando altri medicinali. Questo include qualsiasi medicinale che stai assumendo e che è disponibile per l'acquisto senza prescrizione, così come i medicinali a base di erbe e complementari.
Se hai mai avuto una reazione allergica a un medicinale.

How to take bicalutamide
Torna ai contenutiBefore you start the treatment, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside the pack. It will give you more information about bicalutamide and will provide you with a full list of the side-effects which you may experience from taking it.
Take bicalutamide exactly as your doctor tells you to. Your dose will be printed on the label of the pack of tablets to remind you about what the doctor said to you. The usual dose is one tablet each day. There are two strengths of tablet available: 50 mg and 150 mg. The strength of tablet that you are prescribed will depend on whether you are also having other treatments.
You can take bicalutamide tablets either before or after meals. Taking the tablet with a drink of water will help you to swallow it.
Try to take the tablet at the same time of day each day. This will help you to remember to take your doses regularly.
If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, take it when you remember. If you do not remember until the following day then leave out the forgotten dose and take your next dose when it is due. Do not take two doses on the same day to make up for a missed dose.

Domande frequenti
What is the main purpose of bicalutamide in treating prostate cancer?
Bicalutamide is an anti-androgen medicine that works by blocking the actions of male sex hormones, such as testosterone. Since prostate cancer cells need testosterone to grow, blocking its effect helps to slow down the growth of the cancer. It also assists in reducing symptom flares and side-effects from other treatments or after surgery.
Are there different strengths of bicalutamide, and how does my doctor decide which one to prescribe?
Yes, bicalutamide is available in two strengths: 50 mg and 150 mg tablets. The strength your doctor prescribes will depend on whether you are also receiving other treatments for your prostate cancer.
How often will I need to see my doctor while taking bicalutamide?
You should keep your regular appointments with your doctor. They may ask you to have blood tests periodically to check that your liver remains healthy, as bicalutamide can sometimes affect liver function.
What should I do if I experience persistent stomach discomfort or yellowing of my skin?
You should speak with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, or stomach discomfort or pain that does not go away quickly. These symptoms could indicate that your liver is being affected by the medicine.
Can bicalutamide cause any serious side-effects that I should be aware of, even if they are rare?
While less common than other side-effects, bicalutamide can sometimes cause breathing problems and allergic reactions. If you experience either of these, you should tell your doctor about them as soon as possible.
If I need to have an operation or dental work, should I mention that I am taking bicalutamide?
Yes, it is important to inform the person carrying out the treatment, whether it's an operation or dental work, about all the medicines you are taking, including bicalutamide.
Is it safe to take herbal medicines or over-the-counter products with bicalutamide?
Before starting bicalutamide, it's important to tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including those bought without a prescription, as well as herbal and complementary medicines. This is because some medicines are not suitable to be taken together.
