Taking lansoprazole may make your levothyroxine less effective. This could lead to symptoms of an underactive thyroid, such as feeling tired, cold, or gaining weight, even though you are taking your medication.

Why this happens
Levothyroxine needs a certain amount of stomach acid to be absorbed properly into your body. Lansoprazole works by reducing stomach acid, which can prevent the levothyroxine from dissolving and entering your bloodstream as it should.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should ideally take your levothyroxine at least 4 hours apart from your lansoprazole. Most people find it easiest to take levothyroxine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and then take the lansoprazole later in the day. Your doctor may need to perform extra blood tests to check your thyroid levels and might adjust your dose if necessary.
