Can I take Glycomet and Zincovit together?

Drug interaction guide

There is no known harmful interaction between Glycomet (metformin) and Zincovit (a multivitamin and mineral supplement). In fact, taking these together may be beneficial because long-term use of metformin can sometimes lower your Vitamin B12 levels, which Zincovit helps to replenish.

Why this happens

Metformin can interfere with the absorption of Vitamin B12 in the gut. Zincovit contains Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) and other nutrients that support metabolic health. There are no significant overlaps in how the body processes (metabolises) these two products that would cause a negative reaction.

It is safe to take these together. To reduce the risk of stomach upset, it is usually best to take Glycomet with or after a meal. You can take Zincovit at the same time. Continue to have your Vitamin B12 levels checked by your doctor once a year if you are on long-term Glycomet treatment.

Lactic Acidosis Risk

Stop taking this medicine and seek urgent medical help if you experience severe vomiting, muscle cramps, or extreme tiredness. This can be a sign of lactic acidosis, a rare but serious complication, especially if you have kidney problems or drink heavy amounts of alcohol.

Severe Kidney Disease

You must not take this medicine if your kidneys are not working properly, as it can lead to a dangerous build-up of the drug in your blood.

Medical Scans with Contrast Dye

If you are having an X-ray or scan involving an injection of 'contrast dye', you must stop taking Glycomet for 48 hours before and after the procedure to prevent sudden kidney failure.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking Metformin can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis. It can also cause your blood sugar levels to drop too low (hypoglycaemia). Avoid excessive drinking and binge drinking.

Dairy products (Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt)

Calcium in dairy products can interfere with the absorption of certain minerals in Zincovit, particularly zinc. It is best to take this supplement at least 2 hours before or after consuming dairy.

Tea and Coffee (Caffeine/Tannins)

The tannins and caffeine in tea and coffee can reduce the absorption of vitamins and minerals like zinc and iron. Avoid taking your supplement with these drinks; use water instead.

Whole grains and Legumes (Phytates)

Foods high in phytates (like whole-grain cereals, beans, and nuts) can bind to zinc and prevent your body from absorbing it effectively. Try to take your supplement at a different time from these foods.
