Taking folic acid and zinc together may slightly reduce how much zinc your body absorbs. This is generally only a concern if you are taking high doses of folic acid (over 400mcg) or if your diet is already very low in zinc.

Why this happens

Folic acid and zinc can bind together in the small intestine, forming a complex that the body cannot absorb as easily. This means less zinc enters your bloodstream.

For most people taking a standard multivitamin, this interaction is not a problem. However, if you are taking high-dose folic acid supplements, you should try to take them at a different time of day than your zinc supplement (at least 2 hours apart) to ensure you get the full benefit of both.
