Why this happens

Both doxycycline and sertraline have the potential to affect the electrical activity of the heart. When used together, this effect can be additive, meaning they might increase the risk of the heart's rhythm becoming unstable.

For most people, this combination is safe. However, you should speak to your doctor before taking them together if you have a history of heart problems, low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood, or if you are taking other medicines that affect your heart rhythm. Seek medical help immediately if you feel dizzy, faint, or notice a fast or pounding heartbeat.

Sun exposure

This medicine makes your skin much more sensitive to sunlight. You must avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds, and use a high-factor sun cream (SPF 50) to prevent severe sunburn.

Oesophageal irritation (heartburn)

To prevent painful throat irritation or ulcers, you must swallow the capsules with a full glass of water while standing or sitting upright. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking them.

Bleeding risk

This medicine increases your risk of bleeding. You must consult a pharmacist before taking common painkillers like ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen, as combining them significantly increases the risk of stomach bleeds.

Dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt) and Calcium supplements

Dairy products and calcium can bind to doxycycline in your stomach, preventing your body from absorbing the medicine properly. This makes the antibiotic less effective. You should take doxycycline at least 1 to 2 hours before or after consuming dairy or calcium-rich foods.

Iron and Zinc supplements/fortified foods

Similar to dairy, iron and zinc can stop doxycycline from being absorbed. Avoid taking these supplements or eating highly fortified cereals at the same time as your dose.

Alcohol

It is best to avoid alcohol while taking sertraline. Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of the medication, making you feel more drowsy, dizzy, or uncoordinated.

Grapefruit juice

Grapefruit juice can increase the levels of sertraline in your blood, which may increase the risk of side effects. While the effect is generally modest, it is often recommended to avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice.
