Can I take D3 and Magnesium together?

Taking Vitamin D3 and Magnesium together is generally safe and often beneficial. Magnesium helps your body activate and use Vitamin D3 effectively. However, taking very high doses of both could potentially lead to high calcium levels in some people.

Why this happens

Magnesium is a 'cofactor' for Vitamin D. This means the enzymes that convert Vitamin D into its active form in your liver and kidneys require magnesium to work. Additionally, Vitamin D helps you absorb more magnesium from your gut.

You can take these together. In fact, many people find Vitamin D works better when they have enough magnesium in their diet or through supplements. Stick to the recommended daily doses on the labels unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you have kidney disease, speak to your doctor before taking magnesium supplements.
