Can I take Cranberry supplement and Omeprazole together?

Drug interaction guide

Taking cranberry supplements with omeprazole may slightly reduce how much of the cranberry's active ingredients your body absorbs. Conversely, the acidic nature of cranberry could theoretically interfere with how well omeprazole works to reduce stomach acid, though this is unlikely to be a major problem for most people.

Why this happens

Omeprazole works by reducing stomach acid. Some of the beneficial compounds in cranberries (like anthocyanins) may require a certain level of stomach acidity to be absorbed properly. By making the stomach less acidic, omeprazole might lower the effectiveness of the supplement. Additionally, because cranberry is acidic, it works against the primary goal of omeprazole, which is to neutralise or reduce acid.

It is generally safe to take these together, but you may want to separate the doses by 2 to 4 hours to ensure you get the full benefit of both. If you notice your acid reflux symptoms getting worse after taking cranberry, you should speak to your pharmacist or doctor.
