Why this happens
Apixaban is a direct factor Xa inhibitor. It blocks a specific protein in the blood to prevent clots. Warfarin, a different type of blood thinner, works by blocking Vitamin K; therefore, people on warfarin must watch their Vitamin K intake. Because apixaban does not target Vitamin K, eating foods high in Vitamin K (like spinach or kale) or taking Vitamin K supplements will not change how well the medicine works.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou do not need to change your diet or avoid Vitamin K while taking apixaban. You can safely eat green leafy vegetables and take multivitamins containing Vitamin K. However, always inform your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new high-dose supplements.
