Why this happens

Both medicines increase the levels of a chemical called serotonin in the brain. When used together, serotonin levels can become dangerously high. Additionally, venlafaxine can slow down the way the liver processes amitriptyline, leading to higher levels of amitriptyline in your bloodstream.

You should only take these two medicines together if specifically prescribed and closely monitored by a specialist. If you are taking both and experience symptoms such as confusion, shivering, sweating, muscle twitching, or a very high fever, seek medical help immediately. Do not stop taking either medication without talking to your doctor first.
