Taking these two medicines together significantly increases the risk of dangerous side effects. You may experience extreme sleepiness, dizziness, confusion, and a high risk of falling. Most importantly, this combination can cause your breathing to slow down or stop entirely, which can be fatal. It can also lead to a coma.

Why this happens
Both alprazolam and the hydrocodone in Norco are 'central nervous system depressants'. This means they both slow down the brain's activity. When taken together, their effects add up (synergy), leading to a much stronger and more dangerous level of sedation and respiratory depression (slowed breathing) than either drug would cause on its own.
What you should do
Back to contentsYou should avoid taking these two medicines together unless specifically instructed and closely monitored by your doctor. If your doctor does prescribe both, they should use the lowest possible doses for the shortest time. Seek emergency medical help immediately if you or someone taking these medicines experiences extreme sleepiness, shallow or slow breathing, or difficulty waking up.
