Taking aspirin (especially at high doses) can make allopurinol less effective at lowering uric acid levels in your blood. This might increase the risk of a gout flare-up. Additionally, both medications can be tough on the stomach, slightly increasing the risk of irritation or indigestion.

Why this happens
Allopurinol works by reducing the production of uric acid, while the kidneys help remove uric acid from the body. Aspirin, particularly in higher doses, can interfere with the kidneys' ability to flush out uric acid. This 'antagonistic' effect means the two drugs work against each other.
What you should do
Back to contentsIf you are taking low-dose aspirin (75mg to 150mg) for heart protection, it is usually fine to continue, but you should inform your doctor. Avoid taking high-dose aspirin (for pain relief) regularly without medical advice. If you notice your gout symptoms worsening, speak to your GP.
