Combining alcohol with mirtazapine can make you feel much more drowsy, dizzy, and unsteady on your feet. It can also significantly slow down your reaction times and impair your judgement.

Why this happens
Both alcohol and mirtazapine act as central nervous system depressants. This means they both slow down brain activity. When taken together, their effects add up, leading to much stronger sedation than either would cause on its own.
What you should do
Back to contentsIt is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking mirtazapine. Because this combination can make you very sleepy and less alert, you must not drive or operate machinery. In the UK, it is an offence to drive if your ability is impaired by any drug, including prescription medicines and alcohol.
