Why this happens

Magnesium is a 'divalent cation'. This means it can bind to other drugs in the digestive tract (a process called chelation), preventing them from being absorbed into the bloodstream. Additionally, magnesium has a natural laxative effect which can be worsened by other medications.

To be safe, take your magnesium supplement at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after any other medications. If you are taking specific prescription drugs like antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline or ciprofloxacin), osteoporosis medicine (bisphosphonates), or thyroid hormones, you must speak to your pharmacist or doctor to ensure the timing is correct.
