Taking 5-HTP and modafinil together can lead to an excessive buildup of serotonin in the brain. This can cause a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Symptoms can include feeling very agitated, confused, or sweaty, as well as having a fast heartbeat, muscle twitching, or shivering. Additionally, both substances can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, putting extra strain on your heart.

Why this happens
5-HTP is a building block for serotonin, while modafinil can also increase serotonin levels and stimulate the nervous system. Combining them creates an 'additive effect' where the levels of serotonin and the level of physical stimulation become too high for the body to handle safely.
