You are taking two different forms of the same medication (buprenorphine). This is a 'double dose' situation which significantly increases the risk of dangerous side effects, including severe breathing difficulties, extreme drowsiness, and accidental overdose.

Why this happens
Both '20ug/h transdermal' and 'Butrans' contain the same active ingredient: buprenorphine. Using both at the same time leads to an additive effect, meaning the level of the drug in your bloodstream will be much higher than intended.
What you should do
Back to contentsDo not use both of these products at the same time. You should only use one buprenorphine patch at a time as prescribed by your doctor. If you have accidentally applied both, remove them immediately and seek urgent medical advice. If you feel very sleepy or have trouble breathing, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
