Why this happens

Both codeine and alcohol slow down the central nervous system. When taken together, they 'add up' to cause much stronger effects on the brain and lungs. Additionally, both substances are processed by the liver, and combining them increases the strain on this organ.

It is best to avoid alcohol entirely while taking this medication. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy or dizzy. If you experience extreme sleepiness or difficulty breathing, seek medical help immediately.
